Process

Our Methodology

Every article published on Kalen passes through a structured editorial process. This page describes that process: how content is proposed, researched, reviewed, and verified before reaching readers.

Process Steps

From Source to Publication

01

Editorial Commissioning

Article topics are proposed by the editorial team or by qualified contributors based on identified gaps in the existing coverage landscape. Topics are assessed for relevance to the Kalen readership, availability of high-quality source material, and absence of unresolvable conflicts in the current research record. Commissioned pieces receive a brief covering key questions, required source types, and editorial register.

02

Primary Source Research

Contributors consult primary literature first—peer-reviewed journal articles, systematic reviews, and published meta-analyses where available. Secondary sources including reputable wellness and nutrition publications are used only where primary sources are unavailable or require contextualisation. Each article must include at minimum three verifiable primary citations.

03

Draft Development

Contributors produce a first draft following the commissioned brief. Drafts are required to differentiate clearly between well-established findings, emerging evidence, and expert opinion. Uncertainty is acknowledged where it exists—articles do not overstate the strength of evidence to create a more confident tone. Practical application sections are clearly labelled as guidance, not directives.

04

Editorial Review

All drafts are reviewed by a senior editorial team member. The review process checks claim accuracy against cited sources, consistency with previously published Kalen content, compliance with the editorial vocabulary standards, and overall readability. Revisions are requested when claims require stronger sourcing or when tone departs from the established editorial register.

05

Fact Verification

A dedicated fact-check pass is conducted on every substantive claim. Specific numbers, research findings, and attributed statements are verified against original sources. Where sources have been updated or superseded, the article is adjusted accordingly. Published articles are revisited and updated when significant new evidence enters the field.

06

Publication & Archiving

Approved articles are published with contributor attribution, publication date, and citation list. Version history is maintained internally. Articles that require substantive correction post-publication carry a visible revision note indicating the nature and date of the change.

Contributor Standards

Who Writes for Kalen

Kalen contributors hold qualifications in fields relevant to their authored domains: sports and exercise science, applied nutritional science, behavioural wellness, and related disciplines. Academic credentials alone are insufficient—contributors must also demonstrate the ability to communicate complex subject matter in accessible, non-sensationalised language.

No contributor holds a financial relationship with any supplement, fitness, or wellness brand in a way that could bias their published output. Contributor relationships are declared in writing prior to commissioning.

How We Cite

All primary citations are listed at the end of each article using a consistent reference format. Where a cited study is behind a journal paywall, we link to the publicly accessible abstract. Where authors have made pre-print versions available, we link to those in addition to the published record.

Ingredient profiles in Kalen supplement content are selected based on published nutritional research and undergo independent batch verification for quality and labelling accuracy.
